“What are the forces — people, places, cultures, experiences, conditions — that shaped who I am? What does my combination contribute to this group?”
Upper elementary students in grades 3–5 are at a pivotal moment with identity. They are increasingly aware of social categories — race, gender, ability, class, nationality — and of the ways those categories confer or deny belonging. They are also capable of genuine metacognitive reflection: they can think about why they think what they think, and where their beliefs came from. ASE theory holds that the self is not a fixed thing we are formed through the encounter between constitutional makeup and environment but an emergent product of the relational, cultural, and systemic forces around us — no two students in the room emerged from the same combination of conditions. The Personal Combination Map gives students the vocabulary to understand their own complexity not as confusion but as richness. And it reframes difference between peers: when students recognize that each person's governors have produced a genuinely distinct encounter with the world, engaging with difference becomes a form of ASE inquiry — a practice of reading what conditions are visible in another person's history — rather than a source of social discomfort or threat. Each student's governor profile is not just acceptable; it is constitutive of what the group can do and understand. The group cannot reach its potential without the full range of conditions it contains.

ASE calls this emergent situated agency: every self emerges from a web of conditions that arrived before any conscious choice. The mix of languages you speak, the neighborhood that shaped your earliest memories, the stories your family carried — none of these were chosen, and yet all of them are you. When the curious witness notices these origins without judgment, it creates the loosely held self: a self grounded enough in its own story to remain genuinely open to others' stories.
Every person's life is shaped by specific governors — constitutional, cultural, and circumstantial — that no two people share in exactly the same way. Use this map to trace the specific conditions that have contributed to who you are becoming. Circle two or three that feel most significant or that you rarely name out loud.
“What is the difference between asking a question to win and asking a question to understand? What happens to a belief when a circle of genuine wonderers examines it?”
What Are You Made Of? extended the combination identity work of early elementary into the late elementary years, giving students more nuanced language for the ingredients that shaped them. This lesson carries that work into community: what do we believe together, as a group shaped by all these different combinations, and how does holding those beliefs with genuine openness help us think and belong more fully? Upper elementary students in grades 3–5 are often certain about what they believe and can feel personally threatened when those beliefs are questioned. This lesson addresses that directly by reframing what it means to have your belief examined: it is not a defeat or an insult — it is an honor. Only beliefs worth exploring get examined this carefully. Through structured philosophical inquiry — one student shares a genuine belief, the circle examines it through genuine wondering questions — students practice intellectual humility in one of its most demanding forms: taking another's thinking seriously enough to actually wonder about it. In ASE terms, this practice enacts the loosely held self: students hold their belief with genuine conviction and genuine openness simultaneously — firm enough to act and think, flexible enough to grow. It also enacts co-regulation at the epistemic level: when four students ask four genuine inquiry questions about one belief, the belief-holder leaves with a more developed understanding than the one they brought. The group is wiser than any member alone.

The questioning mind is the beginning of sapience. When students learn to hold a genuine question — not racing toward an answer, but sitting with not-yet-knowing — they practice the most essential capacity in the ASE framework: the ability to observe one's own experience with curiosity rather than evaluation. The loosely held self is most visible here: it can ask 'I wonder why I think that way?' without needing the answer to confirm anything about who it is.

“What conditions does YOUR brain need to learn — and are they in place?”
ASE theory introduces the concept of governors — modifiable environmental conditions that constrain or enable behavior and learning. For late elementary students, this is a powerful reframe: academic struggle is not simply a function of ability or effort, but of the environmental conditions in place. Students who can identify and map their learning governors develop both greater self-knowledge and greater agency over their academic outcomes. This lesson applies Environmental Possibility Mapping (EPM) to academic learning, making the invisible conditions of success visible and discussable.

In ASE, the conditions that shape a learning moment are called governors — forces that expand or narrow what is possible. When students learn to read their own governors (Is this room too loud for me? Do I work better alone or with a partner?), they begin developing what ASE calls the advocating stance: the ability to understand one's own conditions and speak to them rather than simply suffer them. This is sapience applied to learning itself.
“If you were going to explain yourself to a new teacher, what would they need to know about how you learn?”
The Governor Map for Learning introduced the three governors as forces that shape what learning is possible at any given moment. How I Learn Best gets personal with that framework: which specific conditions, within and around each student, open or narrow their capacity to engage? Learning profiles — individualized understandings of how a student best receives, processes, and demonstrates knowledge — improve academic engagement and teacher-student relationships when students can articulate them. This lesson does not use learning style typologies but instead builds an evidence-based personal learning profile through careful observation of the student's own recent experiences.

“When a strategy isn't working, how do you know — and what do you do next?”
Learning — genuinely engaging with new material, building understanding, and sustaining effort when things get hard — is never purely a function of a student's individual ability. It is always a product of the encounter between a person and their environment: what the material demands, what support is available, how safe it feels to not yet know, and what cultural messages surround the student about who is capable of what. Co-regulated learning research (Zimmerman, 2002; Flavell, 1979) identifies monitoring — recognizing in real time whether a strategy is working — as the pivot point between students who adapt and students who persist ineffectively. ASE adds the environmental layer: strategy flexibility is not just a personal skill but an ecological one. The question is never only "what is this student doing?" but "what is this environment producing, and what does it make possible?" Students who can read their own governors — noticing what is constitutionally, culturally, and circumstantially shaping a given learning moment — develop what ASE calls emergent situated agency: the capacity to understand their learning context well enough to act within it wisely, and eventually to change it. ☐ Session Preparation

A loosely held self describes a capacity that ASE names more precisely: the loosely held self. A self loosely held can take in feedback without treating it as a verdict on who it fundamentally is. Every time a student says 'I can't do this yet,' they are practicing the most important developmental move ASE describes: separating one's present capacity from one's permanent identity, and understanding that the self is always in formation rather than already fixed.

“Is learning capacity something you have — or something you build?”
Carol Dweck's (2006) growth vs. tightly held academic identity research, confirmed by Blackwell, Trzesniewski & Dweck's (2007) longitudinal study, demonstrates that implicit beliefs about learning capacity predict academic trajectories independent of measured ability. Students with tightly held academic identity beliefs avoid challenge, give up after failure, and interpret difficulty as evidence of incapacity. Crucially, these beliefs are malleable: explicit instruction in the malleability of intelligence combined with neuroscience-based evidence has been shown to shift beliefs and academic behavior. This lesson adapts this evidence base for upper elementary students.

“What do you do with feedback — and what gets in the way of using it?”
The Governor Map for Learning introduced the conditions that shape what learning is possible. How I Learn Best personalized those conditions for each student. The Feedback Loop adds the relational dimension: how the information that comes back from our efforts, from peers, teachers, and our own reflection, becomes either a resource or a threat, depending on the conditions we are operating in. Feedback is the single most powerful influence on academic achievement — but only when it is specific, actionable, and received in a regulated state. Many students shut down in the face of corrective feedback because their nervous system treats criticism as a social threat. This lesson addresses the regulation dimension of feedback reception and develops students' capacity to distinguish useful from unhelpful feedback.

When students think together — across different ingredients, different governors, different stories — they produce understanding that none could reach alone. ASE calls this co-emergence: the group creates something genuinely new. Every student who contributes a different angle on a problem is living the 5C of Contribution in its most concrete form: their particular mix of origins, experiences, and perspectives adds something to the shared understanding that would simply be missing without them.

“Where in school do you feel like you genuinely belong — and where don't you?”
Belonging is the most powerful predictor of academic engagement in late elementary school. Yet belonging is rarely measured or discussed directly with students. This lesson makes the belonging question explicit, honest, and analytical: not "why don't you belong?" but "what conditions produce belonging and what conditions prevent it?" — the ASE Connectedness C applied to the structural question of school environments.

The pause between trigger and response is where sapience lives. When students discover that there is always a gap between what happens and what they do next — and that the curious witness can step into that gap — they find something that no external condition can take away: the capacity to choose. ASE calls this the advocating stance in its earliest form: advocating for one's own ability to respond rather than react, in any moment and in any environment.
“What feeling is hiding underneath the feeling on top — and what does that one need?”
The Belonging Audit surfaced the relational conditions in this group: where students feel genuinely seen and where they do not. This lesson builds on that audit by moving from the conditions of belonging into the emotions that live beneath surface behavior, the feelings that drive social patterns before anyone names them. James Gross's (1998) process model of emotion regulation identifies the importance of working with the actual emotional content — not just the surface expression. Secondary emotions (emotions about emotions — e.g., anger covering hurt, frustration covering fear, dismissiveness covering sadness) are extremely common in middle childhood and often the most relevant target for intervention. Identifying secondary emotion chains — "what's under the anger?" — is a clinical skill in emotion-focused therapies (Greenberg, 2004) and a prosocial skill that improves both co-regulation and conflict resolution. This lesson adapts that skill for upper elementary.

“Before you can solve a conflict, what do you need to understand about it?”
The Belonging Audit surfaced where students feel seen and where they do not. What's Underneath? examined the emotions that drive behavior. The Conflict Map builds on both by examining what happens when belonging breaks down: how conflict is relational, shaped by history and power, and navigable with the right orientation. Most conflict resolution curricula go directly to problem-solving — compromise, negotiation, mediation. But effective resolution requires accurate understanding of the conflict first. When students skip the understanding phase, they negotiate solutions to the wrong problem. This lesson teaches conflict mapping as a prerequisite to resolution — building the analytical skills that make subsequent problem-solving meaningful.

Body awareness is the foundation of self-knowledge in ASE. When students learn to notice sensation before naming emotion — 'my shoulders are up, my jaw is tight' — they build the perceptual vocabulary that makes co-regulation and co-regulation both possible. The curious witness begins in the body: before we can observe our thoughts or feelings with some distance, we notice our physical experience. This is sapience at its most basic and most powerful level.
“Can you imagine what it's like to be inside someone else's world — not just their opinion, but everything they're carrying?”
Research distinguishes between cognitive perspective-taking (understanding another's beliefs or views) and empathic perspective-taking (resonating with another's emotional experience). Davis's (1983) multidimensional model of empathy and subsequent mentalization research (Fonagy et al., 2002) show that empathic perspective-taking — imagining the full internal world of another person — is a trainable skill with robust effects on prosocial behavior, conflict reduction, and bullying prevention. This lesson teaches structured empathic perspective-taking as a learnable practice aligned with ASE's Compassion and Connectedness capacities.

“What makes a conversation brave — and how do you have one?”
Late elementary students navigate an expanding social world in which the stakes of social speech increase dramatically. Saying something true and important to a person who matters requires four prerequisites: regulation, clarity about the message, permission to speak, and safety about the relationship. This lesson addresses all four.

Compassion arises naturally from emergent situated agency: when we understand that everyone's behavior emerges from conditions they didn't fully choose, judgment softens and curiosity becomes possible. The student who acts out in class is doing so from a history of governors, ingredients, and relational conditions that are mostly invisible to us. When students can hold this perspective — even briefly — they are practicing the most sophisticated form of the loosely held self: a self open enough to see others with generosity.

“What is your body actually doing when you feel stressed — and why is it doing it?”
Research consistently demonstrates that psychoeducation about the stress response reduces shame, improves co-regulation, and increases help-seeking behavior in children and adolescents (Chorpita & Barlow, 1998; Ginsburg & Schlossberg, 2002). When children understand that the racing heart, tight stomach, and frozen feeling have a biological function — threat detection and response — the experience becomes less terrifying. Demystification of physiological stress responses is a foundational component of virtually every evidence-based anxiety intervention for school-age children.

“What is creating the stress in your life right now — and is any of it changeable?”
The Nervous System Handbook gave students a working model of their own physiological states and how the body communicates stress, safety, and readiness. This lesson extends that model outward: stress is not only biological. It is relational, cultural, and circumstantial — an ecology of pressures shaped by the environments students live in. Late elementary students often carry significant stress without the conceptual framework to understand where it comes from. ASE theory's 3Cs framework (Cultural, Constitutional, Circumstantial governors) provides a stress analysis tool: it helps students distinguish externally generated stress from their own nervous system responses, and identify what is potentially moveable.

“What stops you from trying things you might actually love — and is it telling the truth?”
The Nervous System Handbook introduced students to their physiological states, and The Stress Ecology situated those states in the relational and circumstantial forces around them. The Courage to Try New Things extends both by examining what it takes to remain open and willing to engage when the environment feels uncertain or risky. Risk aversion in late elementary students — the tendency to avoid new experiences that carry uncertainty — is frequently misread as laziness or apathy. In most cases, it is a nervous system response to the threat of failure, embarrassment, or rejection. This lesson addresses the neurobiological basis of risk aversion and builds students' capacity to approach rather than avoid manageable novelty.

Anxiety often feels like the truth about the future. When the curious witness can notice 'I am telling myself a story about what will happen' — and hold that story with a little distance — the loosely held self begins to work with anxiety rather than being consumed by it. In ASE, this is sapience applied to emotional experience: the capacity to observe one's own mind in motion and recognize that thoughts about the future are not the same as the future itself.
“Are the things you're telling yourself actually true — or are they your brain's first draft?”
Cognitive-behavioral therapy's thought record technique (Beck, 1979; adapted for youth by Stallard, 2002) is one of the most extensively validated interventions for anxiety and depression in children. Meta-analyses consistently show CBT-informed approaches are effective at reducing anxiety symptoms in school-age children (Cartwright-Hatton et al., 2004). The key skill — identifying automatic negative thoughts, examining their accuracy, and generating more accurate alternatives — can be taught as a general wellbeing tool without clinical framing for upper elementary students. This lesson teaches "thought checking" as cognitive co-regulation.

Resilience in ASE is not the ability to stay unchanged through difficulty — it is the capacity to be changed in ways that still feel like you. The loosely held self is what makes this possible: a self secure enough in its own foundation to bend without breaking. When students understand that hard experiences leave marks but do not define them — that they are always more than what has happened to them — they are building the psychological ground from which genuine advocacy for themselves becomes possible.

“When you have to make a hard choice, what guides you?”
Students who develop a clear sense of personal values as guides — rather than just rules — make more consistent, more authentic, and more resilient decisions. ASE theory holds that values are part of a student's Constitutional makeup — stable dispositions that can be identified, named, and relied upon even when external guidance is absent.

The growth edge of difficulty is visible only from within it. When students learn to ask 'what is this hard thing asking me to become?' rather than 'why is this happening to me?' they are turning difficulty into sapience: using hard experience as a lens that reveals something true about one's own edges, capacities, and emerging strengths. This reframe is not about minimizing difficulty — it is about staying in contact with one's own development even when it is uncomfortable.

“What fascinates you so much that you lose track of time — and where could that lead?”
Curiosity-based career exploration — beginning from what genuinely captivates a student and mapping outward to careers that engage similar domains — produces more durable career motivation than aptitude-based approaches. For late elementary students, the goal is not career choice but the expansion of possibility — helping students see that the things that fascinate them connect to real work that real people do.

We disagree because we are different, and we are different because of conditions that arrived before any choice. When students understand that conflict is often a meeting between two different sets of governors, ingredients, and relational histories, disagreement becomes less threatening and more interesting. The loosely held self can hold this: it can say 'my experience led me here, and your experience led you there, and both are real' without requiring one of us to be wrong.
“Who made the things around you — and what does that tell you about what's possible?”
Following Curiosity into Futures opened the question of what students are genuinely drawn to. This lesson turns that curiosity toward something equally important: who the world was built by, who it was built for, and where those emerging interests fit into the larger picture of systems that need redesign. Students who understand that the built world was made by real people with particular training, intentions, and choices are more likely to see themselves as potential makers of future worlds. This lesson applies critical consciousness at the career development level: the world was built, therefore it can be rebuilt, and students can be part of rebuilding it.

The capacity to genuinely listen — to hold another person's perspective inside yourself long enough to understand it, before responding — is one of the most demanding practices ASE describes. It requires the loosely held self to make room for something that might challenge how you see things, and the curious witness to stay interested in the other person's experience even when it differs from your own. This is Connectedness and Compassion in action: staying in contact when contact is hard.
“What are the four things that actually build confidence — and how much of each do you have?”
Lent, Brown & Hackett's (1994) Social Cognitive Career Theory identifies self-efficacy — belief in one's capacity to perform a specific task — as the strongest predictor of career exploration behavior, more powerful than actual ability or interest. Self-efficacy is built through four sources: mastery experiences (direct success), vicarious learning (seeing similar others succeed), verbal persuasion (credible encouragement), and physiological states (how one feels during the activity). Understanding these four sources transforms career confidence from a stable-seeming pattern that is always context-dependent into something buildable.

Markus & Nurius's (1986) possible selves theory demonstrates that hoped-for future selves create motivational force in the present — but only when those selves are specific and elaborated. Oyserman, Terry & Bybee's (2002) research with middle school students showed that intervention groups who developed elaborated possible selves with specific strategies showed significantly increased academic engagement and decreased problem behavior compared to controls. For upper elementary students at the beginning of identity formation, building specific, sensory, strategy-linked possible selves is a foundational future-orientation skill.

“What is between where you are now and a future you want — and how do you get there?”
Following Curiosity into Futures opened the question of what students are drawn to. Who Built This World? turned that curiosity toward systems and their makers. The Possible Path connects personal interest and critical awareness to concrete imagination: if this is who I am and what I care about, what does a path forward actually look like? Late elementary students are at the developmentally appropriate moment for connecting present experience to future possibility — not in a rigid goal-planning way, but in a way that cultivates agency and direction. Environmental Possibility Mapping (EPM) in the career domain means helping students see what conditions support a desired future, what is missing, and what is moveable.

Repair is not erasure — it is integration. When students return after a conflict and rebuild connection, they are not pretending the rupture didn't happen; they are demonstrating that the relationship is larger than the wound. In ASE terms, this is co-emergence after difficulty: two people create something new together that neither could have made before the conflict and the repair. The loosely held self makes repair possible: a self that doesn't need the other person to have been perfect in order to stay connected.
