“What are the special things that helped make me who I am — and why does everyone's combination matter?”
Children in the early elementary years are already reading difference — they notice when someone's lunch looks unfamiliar, when a classmate's home language sounds different, when two families organize daily life in ways that don't match. ASE theory reads that attentiveness not as social awkwardness to be smoothed over but as a genuine capacity worth cultivating. This lesson uses the IDIC framework to give children language and structure for what they are already doing: noticing that the conditions shaping each person are specific and unrepeatable, and that those conditions — not some fixed essential nature — produce who each person is becoming. Even at ages 5–8, children have already been shaped by a rich and unique combination of forces. The "Story Map" activity invites them to name the specific conditions, people, and places that have contributed to who they are becoming — concretely, playfully, and without hierarchy. When students share their maps with each other, they practice a core ASE move: recognizing that another person's governors are real and worth knowing, not just tolerating. This is co-regulation at the cultural level — each person's map expands what the group understands about the conditions that produce people. This lesson builds the foundation for identity work that extends across the K–12 experience, giving students language for a way of understanding themselves — as always-emerging, always-growing — that deepens with them over time.

ASE calls this emergent situated agency (the understanding that every person's capacities, perspectives, and responses emerge from the conditions, relationships, and environments that have shaped them — not from a fixed inner essence, but from the ongoing interaction between person and world): every self emerges from a web of conditions no one created alone. The ingredients that make each student who they are — family, neighborhood, language, story — arrived before any choice was made. When the inside watcher notices these conditions without judgment, the loosely held self becomes possible: a self grounded enough to see its own origins and remain open to growth rather than defended against it.

“What happens when I ask a wondering question instead of arguing — and how does my thinking grow?”
In the first Signature ASE lesson, students named and celebrated the combinations that shaped them. The Wondering Circle carries that identity work forward by turning curiosity outward: into wondering about each other's beliefs, and into the practice of letting others' questions actually land and change something. Young children are natural wonderers — they ask "why?" constantly, and they hold their beliefs with a delightful combination of conviction and flexibility. This lesson builds on that natural capacity by drawing out the difference between a "trying to win" question ("But that's not right!") and a genuine wondering question ("I wonder why you think that?"). In ASE terms, the Wondering Circle enacts the loosely held self at the most developmentally accessible level: students share something they believe and practice letting others' wondering in. They do not have to change their minds — but they have to be open enough to let the questions land. When a child's wondering question is received with genuine curiosity rather than defensiveness, both the questioner and the belief-holder are co-regulated toward greater openness and connection. And each person's combination of wonderings produces more understanding than any one child brought alone. This lesson builds the foundation for the more structured philosophical inquiry practiced in grades 3–12, and introduces the "I wonder..." sentence frame as a permanent addition to the group's shared vocabulary.

The wondering circle builds the most fundamental ASE capacity: using the inside watcher to stay curious about yourself and the world at the same time. Every time a student asks a genuine question and holds it without rushing to an answer, they practice the loosely held self — a self that can wonder about its own experience without needing to fix or defend it. Sapience begins in exactly this space: the turn inward that says, 'I notice myself noticing.'

“What does learning feel like for you — and what helps it happen?”
Young children often lack the language to describe their own learning, which means their academic struggles are interpreted through adult frameworks rather than their own. Drawing-based activities give students who are pre-verbal or language-limited about inner experience a concrete way to externalize and communicate it. The Learning Map grounds the counselor's future work in the student's own epistemology — what learning looks, sounds, and feels like from the inside — rather than standardized deficit frameworks.

In ASE, the forces around a learning moment are called governors. Teaching students to ask 'what's happening around me?' before 'what's wrong with me?' is the beginning of the advocating stance toward one's own environment. When students learn to read their classroom — noise level, energy, who's nearby — they are developing the perceptual skill that makes co-regulated learning possible. The environment is always already acting on the learner; sapience is learning to notice that action.
“What do I already know — and what do I need to find out before I begin?”
In The Learning Map, students began to see their learning as something that happens inside a specific environment, not as a solo process. Before I Start extends that environmental awareness into pre-task preparation: what conditions, in the body and in the space, make engaged learning more possible before the work begins. co-regulated learning research (Zimmerman, 2002; EEF, 2021) consistently identifies planning as the highest-leverage metacognitive skill: students who articulate what they know, what they want to learn, and how they will approach a task outperform those who plunge in. Effect sizes for metacognition and co-regulation average +7 months of additional learning progress per year. For early elementary students this means teaching the habit of pausing before starting — not as a ritual but as genuine self-orientation.

“What happens in your brain when something is hard — and then you keep going?”
The Learning Map and Before I Start built the idea that learning happens inside conditions — and that students can notice and prepare those conditions. Brain Builders extends this further: into the biology of learning itself, and into the growth-oriented relationship with effort and difficulty that makes those conditions sustainable. Carol Dweck's loosely held self research demonstrates that children who understand the brain as a changeable organ — one that grows through effort — persist longer, recover faster from failure, and achieve more. For early elementary students, this understanding needs to be concrete, sensory, and personally connected. This lesson uses movement, storytelling, and the student's own recent learning experience to make neuroplasticity meaningful.

“What did your last mistake teach you — and how could we put it on display?”
ASE theory understands learning not as the expression of fixed ability but as emergent from conditions — the constitutional, cultural, and circumstantial governors that shape what a child can do and how they respond to difficulty. When a child attributes struggle to who they are rather than to the conditions producing that struggle, they lose access to the most generative question available: what can be changed? The Learning Exhibit reframes errors as information about conditions — not as evidence of a fixed self. This aligns with research on implicit theories of intelligence (Dweck, 2006; Blackwell et al., 2007), but the ASE framing deepens the intervention: it is not simply that mistakes are tolerable, but that reading what produced a mistake is an act of sapience — the capacity to turn awareness back on the conditions shaping one's own experience. The Museum creates an environment in which that sapience is modeled, practiced, and celebrated.

“What does it feel like to figure something out with someone else?”
Vygotsky's zone of proximal development establishes that the most powerful learning happens in the zone just beyond what a child can do alone, with the support of a more capable other. But the social-relational quality of learning is often invisible to early elementary students, who understand learning as a solitary, individual act. This lesson makes the relational character of learning explicit and experiential. The ASE frame adds the Cultural lens: in many communities, collaborative, relational learning is the norm — this lesson validates that mode.

The group is a regulatory environment for each individual's learning. Every student thinks from a different combination of ingredients, and when the group thinks together, they produce something none could reach alone — this is co-emergence in its most visible classroom form. When students experience their different thinking styles as contributions rather than deficits, they begin to understand that the loosely held self is not a weaker self, but a self open enough to be shaped by encounter with others.

“What does it feel like to be somewhere safe — and what helps make that?”
Psychological safety — the felt sense of being able to be oneself without fear of rejection or ridicule — is a prerequisite for learning, emotional disclosure, and genuine group work. For early elementary students, psychological safety is primarily somatic before it is cognitive. This lesson builds safety experientially, not as a rule set but as a co-created environment, drawing on constructed emotion theory's insight that safety is a nervous system event before it is a cognitive one.

The pause before reaction is the moment sapience becomes available. When students learn that there is always a gap between what happens and what they do next, they discover their own agency: the inside watcher can step into that gap. ASE calls this the advocating stance in its earliest form — not advocacy toward others yet, but the foundational move of advocating for one's own capacity to choose rather than react.
“Can you find a word that fits your feeling more exactly than "mad" or "sad"?”
Making Our Safe Space established the relational conditions for this group: the shared agreements that make genuine expression possible. Feelings Have Colors and Shapes deepens that foundation by giving students a richer language for naming what they carry, one that reaches past word labels into the sensory and aesthetic. Lisa Feldman Barrett's (2017) theory of constructed emotion demonstrates that emotions are built from concepts — people who have more granular emotional vocabulary experience and regulate their emotions differently than those who do not. Emotional granularity predicts better mental health outcomes, more sophisticated regulatory strategies, and more effective social behavior (Kashdan et al., 2015). For young children, expanding the feeling vocabulary beyond mad/sad/happy/scared is a developmentally foundational wellbeing intervention.

“What is the weather inside you today — and what does it need?”
Making Our Safe Space created the relational ground, and Feelings Have Colors and Shapes gave students richer sensory language for their inner states. The Feeling Weather Report builds on both by adding the dimension of time: feelings are not fixed states but moving, changing weather — influenced by what is happening in and around us. Emotional granularity — the capacity to distinguish among similar emotional states rather than collapsing them into broad categories like "fine" or "bad" — is a significant predictor of emotional regulation, social competence, and mental health outcomes (Barrett, 2017). The Feeling Weather Report develops the practice of tracking the changing weather of an inner state across time, circumstances, and relationships — a more accurate and more useful skill than simple emotion labeling.

When students learn to name what they feel in their bodies, they are building the perceptual vocabulary that makes co-regulation possible. The inside watcher notices sensation before thought — 'my chest is tight, my hands are cold' — and that noticing creates just enough distance to choose rather than react. In ASE, this body-based awareness is the ground floor of sapience: the capacity to turn attention toward one's own experience with curiosity rather than judgment.
“What might someone else be feeling inside that you can't see from the outside?”
Perspective-taking — the ability to represent another person's mental and emotional state — is one of the most researched prosocial skills in developmental psychology (Davis, 1983; Feshbach, 1978). Mentalization-based interventions in schools (Midgley et al., 2021) show significant improvements in social-cognitive abilities, emotion regulation, and reductions in problematic behavior. For K-2 students, perspective-taking is best taught through concrete, story-based activities before extending to real relationships. ASE frames this as the foundation of Connectedness and Compassion.

“Does fair always mean the same for everyone?”
Young children's strong sense of fairness is a moral developmental asset, not a problem to manage. This lesson engages that sense productively by introducing the concept of equity — the idea that fairness sometimes means giving different things to different people based on what they need — through concrete, visual, and narrative examples. This is critical consciousness at the early elementary level.

Compassion for oneself and for others begins in the same place: the recognition that everyone is doing the best they can from within the conditions that found them. When students understand that others' unkindness usually comes from their own pain — from ingredients they didn't choose — they begin to see behavior through a emergent situated agency lens. The loosely held self makes this possible: a self secure enough to stay curious about others rather than only defending against them.

“What is your body telling you right now — and what does it need?”
The body and the mind are not two separate systems that send messages to each other. They are one system — a system that is always, simultaneously, in encounter with an environment. What a child's body registers in a classroom, a conversation, or a difficult moment is not purely biological: it is relational. Body signals are the environment registering in the person. Contemporary neuroscience supports this non-dualistic picture. Barrett (2017) demonstrates that emotions are not fixed biological readouts but constructed experiences — the brain draws on the body's internal signals (interoception), past experience, and current context to generate what we call feelings. Damasio (1994) shows that somatic markers — body states accompanying thought — shape attention and judgment before conscious awareness. Learning to notice and name these signals is foundational: children who develop body literacy gain access to information that usually operates below awareness, and they learn to read that information as meaningful — not frightening, not random, but worth understanding (Levine, 2010).

Worry lives in the gap between the present moment and an imagined future. When the inside watcher learns to notice 'I am worrying right now' rather than being swept along by the worry itself, it creates the observational distance that makes regulation possible. In ASE terms, this is sapience applied to emotional experience: the capacity to watch one's own mind in motion without becoming identical to what it's doing. The loosely held self can hold worry without being defined by it.

“What helps YOU settle when you're upset — and where does that live?”
The Body Knows introduced body signals as information worth noticing and naming rather than suppressing or ignoring. This lesson builds directly on that awareness: now that students have begun to recognize their own signals, they develop the relational and environmental strategies that actually help shift them. co-regulation in early childhood is not primarily a cognitive skill but a somatic and relational one. Children develop the capacity to regulate through co-regulation with trusted adults; regulation is first relational before it can be drawn upon independently. Effective regulation tools are personal — what works for one child's nervous system may not work for another's. Children identify their own effective regulation strategies through guided discovery rather than technique instruction.

“What is your feeling trying to tell you?”
The Body Knows introduced body signals as information, and The Calm-Down Garden developed strategies for working with those signals. All Feelings Are Messengers completes that sequence by addressing what feelings are for: not problems to eliminate, but messages worth understanding. Children who learn to treat emotions as information — rather than experiences to suppress or perform — develop significantly stronger emotional regulation and social competence (Gottman et al., 1997). The message-based framework for emotions gives children a practical tool for engaging with their inner life rather than being overwhelmed by it or shutting it down.

“Is the thought in your head helping you — or scaring you?”
Cognitive behavioral approaches for children consistently demonstrate that the relationship between thoughts and feelings is a teachable concept even at K-2 developmental levels (Stallard, 2002; Seligman et al., 1995). When children learn that thoughts are mental events — not necessarily facts — they gain agency over anxious or self-critical spirals. The "brave thought vs. worried thought" framework adapts CBT cognitive restructuring for early elementary students without clinical framing, building the foundational habit of noticing and questioning automatic thoughts.

“Who is in your corner — and how do they help?”
Social support is the most robustly researched protective factor in child mental health (Masten, 2014). Yet children often do not explicitly know that they have support or who provides it — particularly when support comes from non-traditional sources. This lesson makes students' support networks visible, named, and honored — which itself strengthens the felt sense of security those networks provide.

Frustration is information, not failure. When students learn to meet frustration with curiosity — 'what is this frustration telling me about what I need?' — they transform an obstacle into an advocating signal. ASE calls this the turn from reactive to responsive: the inside watcher notices the frustration, the loosely held self holds it without being overtaken, and sapience asks what the environment needs to change to make learning possible again.

“What do the grown-ups in your life do all day — and why does it matter?”
Career development research demonstrates that children's career schemas are formed early and shaped primarily by the occupations visible in their immediate environment (Gottfredson, 1981). This lesson expands students' occupational awareness by beginning where they are — the people they actually know and love — before expanding outward. The ASE Cultural lens is primary: the lesson honors the work children already see as legitimate and meaningful before introducing new possibilities.

Conflict often feels like a threat to the self, which is why it triggers defensiveness rather than curiosity. When students understand that their perspective and their partner's perspective both arise from different ingredient combinations — different families, different histories, different governors — the loosely held self has a framework for staying open in disagreement. Emergent situated agency reframes conflict: we disagree not because one of us is wrong, but because we each became someone different.
“What do you notice yourself drawn to — and how do you know?”
In What Do People Do All Day?, students discovered that the world of work is populated by all kinds of people doing all kinds of things in all kinds of environments. This lesson turns that outward curiosity inward — not to evaluate what children are "good at," but to notice: what do they find themselves drawn to? What lights up in them across different activities and settings? What keeps calling them back? ASE holds that every impression a child has — every preference, resistance, pull, or energy shift — tells them something real about their encounter with an environment. Nothing noticed here is a fixed verdict; children change, and so do their environments. This lesson invites students to become curious observers of their own experience rather than evaluators of their worth. It builds the habit of noticing-without-judging that underlies the Curiosity C throughout the ASE framework.

The ability to say 'I hear you AND I see it differently' is one of the most sophisticated developmental achievements ASE aims to build. It requires a loosely held self secure enough to hold another person's reality without abandoning one's own, and sapient enough to notice when defensiveness is rising. This is Connectedness and Compassion working together: the capacity to stay in genuine contact with another person even when disagreement is real.
“Is there someone who does important work — and looks or sounds or comes from somewhere like you?”
What Do People Do All Day? introduced the world of work as a wide landscape, and What Do I Notice About Myself? helped students locate their own strengths within it. People Who Look Like Me adds the crucial dimension of representation: seeing people who share your combination already doing things you are curious about makes the imagined future more real. Social Cognitive Career Theory (Lent, Brown & Hackett, 1994) identifies vicarious learning — seeing people similar to oneself succeed — as one of four primary sources of career self-efficacy. Research on representation in career education (O'Brien et al., 2000; Gottfredson, 2002) shows that children narrow their career aspirations based on perceived accessibility as early as age 6, with gender and race operating as filters on imaginable futures. Introducing diverse career mirrors that share some dimension of identity with students directly addresses this narrowing and expands self-efficacy.

“What problem in the world do you want to help fix — even a little?”
Career education research (Savickas, 2005; Gottfredson, 2002) increasingly emphasizes narrative and contribution-based career framing over vocational matching. Savickas's career construction theory positions careers as a response to an existential problem — what do I want to contribute? — rather than a best-fit between self and job. For early elementary students, the shift from "what do you want to be?" (role-identity) to "what do you want to help with?" (contribution) is both developmentally accessible and deeply aligned with ASE's Contribution axis. Research on purpose (Damon, 2008) shows that even young children can articulate simple purposes that motivate future behavior.

“What do you dream about — and what is one small step toward it?”
Goal-setting research demonstrates that even young children benefit from the connection between present action and future aspiration — but only when future aspirations are treated as worth taking seriously and present steps are made concrete and achievable (Gollwitzer, 1999). For early elementary students, adults often either dismiss children's dreams as unrealistic or treat goal-setting as a performance exercise. This lesson takes both the dream and the step seriously.

Repair after conflict is not a return to what was before — it is the creation of something new between two people who have seen each other's edges. When students practice repair, they are learning that the self is not broken by rupture and that relationships are resilient. This is emergent situated agency made relational: the connection between two people is not a fixed thing but an ongoing co-creation, and rupture is part of how it grows.
